weather radar Flashcards
where do we control WX radar from?
MFDCP
what does the vertical profile capability allow?
to see the shape and vertical profile of a thunderstorm
what is the max operating altitude?
55,000ft
what is the operating temperature range?
-20 to 70C
what does the forced standby (FSBY) feature do?
weight on wheels switch inhibits the transmitter when the aircraft is on the ground
what is the max horizontal scan angle?
100 degrees
what is max vertical scan?
60 degrees
what returns will we get on screen?
black, green, yellow, red, magenta
what will indicate the transmitting WX radar?
amber TX preceded by white or green WX status depending on selection
what does the vertical profile allow?
enables the pilot to see vertical extension of clouds, examine angle of a cells leading edge, check cloud tops and clearly distinguish between ground and weather returns
what is the range of tilt?
15 degrees either side
can the system display lighting strikes?
no
what will tell us the WX radar is in FSBY?
ON GND displayed in the. WX field of MFD
when will the radar antenna stop moving?
when set to STBY or RDR OFF
what will selecting STBY in the air do?
keep the WX radar in a steady state
what will selecting RDR OFF do?
prevents the radar from transmitting and antenna scanning
what is WX mode?
normal weather detection mode
what is WXA mode?
enables the radar target alert feature in a range from 5nm to 170nm which advises the pilot of a potentially hazardous target directly in front of the aircraft outside the selected range
when WXA is selected what will target alert monitor?
monitors 50nm beyond selected range and 10 degrees either side of the aircraft heading
what signals us to a WXA target alert?
2 red arcs separated by a black arc
what does GND MAP allow?
allows the pilot to use the WX radar as a ground radar
what does antenna stabilisation compensate for?
30 degrees in pitch and roll to direct the antenna to the horizon
what will we get If stabilisation limits are exceeded by aircraft manoeuvres?
STAB LIMIT
what will STAB OFF do?
disconnects information to the AHRS and the radar antenna is according to actual pitch and roll attitude
what does TRACK CTL allow?
allows the pilot to change the horizontal WX detection line 50 degrees left and right of the aircrafts track
is the gain changeable in WX mode?
no, only in GND mode
how is WX radar indication best displayed?
on MFD 2 when pushing the PUSH SEL button on the MODE/TILT knob and selecting WX
how do we set the WX radar up for operation ASAP after takeoff?
- 360 MAP on MFD2
- TEST with 40NM
- WX
- range and tilt as required on MFDCP
- check WX-ON GND on MFD
what should we do if the WX RDR fails during operation in bad weather?
continue flight based on last received information and change flight path to avoid penetration of bad weather
