weather hazards Flashcards
global atmospheric circulation
describes the movement of air around the planet
high pressure (down)
low pressure (up)
where are rainforests found
0 degree latitude
low pressure (air rising)
causes rain to form
where are deserts formed
30 degrees
high pressure (air sinking)
unable to form rain
latitude
altitude
how far from the equator
height of land above sea level
tarde winds
katabic winds
tornadoes
winds that blow from high pressure to low pressure
caused by air flowing downhill
rotating winds
normal year
el niño
la niña
warm water pushed from the east pacific to the west pacific by trade winds.
weaker trade winds try to push warm water from west pacific to east pacific.
normal year however with extreme trade winds
when does a tropical storm classify as a hurricane
74 miles per hour
what causes a hurricane
thunderstorms move over tropical oceans (tropical storms at least 26.5 degree celsius warm the air above it).
The warm air starts to rise
This forms clouds
this causes low air pressure
the low air pressure fills the space causing wind speeds to increase
once the wind speed reaches 74mph it is officially classified as a hurricane
coriolis effect
earths rotation causing storms to swirl clockwise in the southern hemisphere and anticlockwise in the northern hemisphere
