Weather Equipment Flashcards
Barometer
Used to measure air pressure (millibars)
Kept inside Stevenson screens
Moveable needle so you can make comparisons
Max/Min Thermometer
Records maximum and minimum temperature of day
Mixture of mercury and alcohol
On maximum side, expanding mercury can expand more freely into vacuum
On minimum side, expansion of mercury is restricted by contracting alcohol
Steel marker marks both temperatures
Wet/dry bulb thermometer (hygrometer)
Measures humidity in air
Table that looks are difference between wet bulb and dry bulb
Can find a dew point
Difference caused by latent heat created by process of evaporation
Rain gauge
Used to measure rainfall (mm)
Should be placed on grass to avoid extra water splashing
Should be checked regularly to avoid evaporation
Wine Vane
Check direction of wind
Placed on top of buildings so they are full exposed
Compass points used
Anemometer
Measure wind speed (mph/kph)
Placed on top of buildings to get full wind and don’t experience channeling of wind
Stevenson Screen
White louvred wooden box
Contains weather equipment like thermometers and barometers
White to reflect sunlight and slats to allow air circulation
Placed above ground away from buildings
To take accurate readings from air rather than direct sunlight or heat from ground/buildings
