weather Flashcards
Humidity
Humidity is the amount of water vapor present in the air.
Cumulus Cloud
are clouds which have flat bases and are often described as “puffy”, “cotton-like” or “fluffy” in appearance.
Stratus Cloud
low-level clouds characterized by horizontal layering with a uniform base, as opposed to convective or cumuliform clouds that are formed by rising thermals.
Cirrus Cloud
genus of atmospheric cloud generally characterized by thin, wispy strands,
Cumulonimbus Cloud
, is a dense, towering vertical cloud associated with thunderstorms and atmospheric instability, forming from water vapor carried by powerful upward air currents.
Condensation
water that collects as droplets on a cold surface when humid air is in contact with it.
Evaporation
the process of turning from liquid into vapor.
Precipitation
the action or process of precipitating a substance from a solution.
Runoff
a further competition, election, race, etc., after a tie or inconclusive result.
Rain
Rain is liquid water in the form of droplets that have condensed from atmospheric water vapor and then becomes heavy enough to fall under gravity.
Sleet
sleet forms when rain freezes
Snow
frozen water vapor
hail
frozen specks of water
Polar – Maritime Airmass
a large body of air where temputure and mositure content are constant throughout
Tropical – Maritime Airmass
air mases that form over the northern pacific ocean and more
Polar – Continental Airmass
deveolop over warm waters of gulf of mexico
Tropical – Continental Airmass
forms over deserts of mexico.
Cold Front
forms where cold air moves under warm air, which is less dense, warm air is less dense than cold air.
Warm Front
where warm air moves over cold , denser air.
Thunderstorm
they produce rain, lighting, and thunder.
a usually brief, heavy storm that consitsts of rain, strong winds, lighting, and thuunder
lighting
an electric discharge discharge that takes place between two oppositly charged surfaces, suc as between a cloud and the ground , between two parts of the same cloud
Thunder
the sound caused by the rapid expanison of air along an electrical strike
Tornado
rotataing cloud of air that has very high wing speeds, is visiable as a funnel shaped cloud and touches the ground
Hurricane
a sereve strom that develops over tropical oceans and whose strong winds of more than 120/km/h spirial in toward the intensely low pressure storm center.
Thermometer
an instirusment that measures and indicates tempture
Anemometer
an instrument used to measure wind speed
