Weather Flashcards
Air mass
a body of air with horizontally uniform temperature, humidity, and pressure.
Continental polar
These conditions usually result from the invasion of cold arctic air masses that originate from the snow covered regions of northern Canada.
Maritime Polar
air masses that move westward over the Pacific, collecting warmth and moisture from the ocean.
Maritime Polar
Maritime tropical air masses originate over the warm waters of the tropics and Gulf of Mexico, where heat and moisture are transferred to the overlying air from the waters below.
Continental tropical
A dry air mass formed over land in area close to the equator.
Front
A front is a transition zone between two air masses
Warm front
the boundary of an advancing mass of warm air
Cold front
the boundary of an advancing mass of cold air
Occluded front
When a cold front slides under a warm front and pushes it up
Stationery front
When warm front and a cold front push together
Wind vane
An instrument for showing the direction of the wind.
Rain gauge
A rain gauge is an instrument used by meteorologists and hydrologists to gather and measure the amount of rain that falls
Thermometer
A thermometer is a device that measures temperature
Hygrometer
A hygrometer is an instrument used for measuring the moisture content in the atmosphere.
Anemometer
an instrument for measuring the speed of the wind
