Weather Flashcards
Air mass
An air mass is a large body of air with similar properties through it.
Continental polar
Continental polar is a cold and dry air mass.
Maritime polar
Maritime polar is a cold and wet air mass.
Maritime tropical
Maritime tropical is a warm and wet air mass.
Front
A front is a boundary between two air masses.
Warm front
A warm front is when a warm air mass meets and overrides a cold air mass, warm air moves a over cold air, bring long periods of light drizzle, brings warmer temperatures.
Cold front
A cold front is cold air mass meets and causes a warm air mass to rise, fast moving, produces thunderstorms, heavy rain, snow, brings cooler temperatures.
Occluded front
An occluded front is a cold air mass overtakes a slower moving warm air mass and forces the warm air up. The cold air continues advancing until it meets another cold air mass, brings cooler temperatures, usually brings more precipitation.
Stationary front
A stationary front is when a cold air mass meets a warm air mass and results in little movement, drizzles does not bring heavy precipitation, little movement or moves back and forth over the same area.
Continental tropical
Continental tropical is a warm and dry air mass.
Barometer
A tool that measures air pressure
- high pressure-sunny skies
- low pressure-stormy
Anemometer
A tool that measures wind speed
Hydrometer
A tool that measures the moisture in the air
Rain Gauge
A tool that measures how much rain has fallen
Wind Vane
A tool that shows the direction the wind is blowing FROM
