Ecosystems Flashcards
Environment
All living and nonliving things around an organism is its environment
Adaptation
A adaptation is a type of behavior that allows a species to survive and reproduce in its environment
Species
All members of a population are members of the same species. Organisms of the same species have the same general physical characteristics and other adaptations.
Community
Organisms that live together in a ecosystem make a community (living things)
Biotic
Biotic factors are living things in a ecosystem
Abiotic
Abiotic factors are nonliving things in a ecosystem
Niche
The role that each animal and species play in its community is its niche. Where an organism lives and how it gets its food is part of its niche
Ecosystems
An ecosystem is where all living and nonliving things interact
Population
Each population contains all of the organisms of the same kind of community, all members of of a population are members of the same species
Habitat
A habitat is the animals home and where they live and find food
Biome
Biomes are regions of the world with similar climate, animals and plants
Taiga
The Taiga is the largest land biome in the world, the Taiga has long, cold winters and short, mild and wet summers
Deciduous Forest
The Deciduous Forest can be found in the United States,Canada,Europe,China,Japan and Russia. The Deciduous Forest has four seasons, the average temperature is 50 degrees Fahrenheit
Rainforest
The Rainforest is located close to the equator. The Rainforest is warm and wet all year long, the average temperatures range from 70 degrees Fahrenheit to 85 degrees Fahrenheit.
Grasslands
The weather varies greatly,it is cold in the winter and hot in the summer. Animals that live in the Grasslands are mostly herbivores which means they only eat plants.
Desert
The Desert covers 1/5 of the earth. Antarctica is the biggest desert. Deserts can be hot and cold with very little rainfall.
Tundra
The Tundra covers 1/5 of the earth. It is the coldest biome on earth and can have the temperature of -50 degrees Fahrenheit.
Decomposer
Are organisms that consume dead plants and animals. Bacteria and mushrooms are examples of decomposers.
Consumer
Are organisms that get energy from eating producers or other consumers. Deer are an example of consumers.
Producer
An organism that uses the sun’s energy to make their own food. Green plants are producers.
Omnivore
An organism that eats plants and animals.
Canivore
An organism that eats only meat(other organisms).
Herbivore
An organism that eats only plants(other vegetation).
Food chain
The food chain shows how energy flows through an ecosystem,(what organism eats what organism)
Food web
A group of interconnected food chains
Symbiosis
A relationship in which two different organisms live on close association with each other.
