Weather Flashcards
What are the factors necessary for a thunderstorm to form and what are the three stages of thunderstorm development?
Cumulus – Updraft
Mature – precipitation beginning
Dissipating – downdraft
What are the main types of icing an aircraft may encounter?
Structural
Induction system
Instrument icing
Name the three types of structural ice that may occur in-flight?
Clear ice - hard and glossy
Rime ice – Brittle and frosty
Mixed ice - hard and rough
What are the intensity categories of aircraft structural icing?
Trace – no significant accumulation
Light – accumulation over one hour
Moderate – accumulation in short flight
Severe – rapid, dangerous accumulation
What is Radiation fog?
Calm, clear night, ground looses heat, the cool air is cooled below dewpoint, fog forms.
What is advection fog?
Warm air blows over cold surface, surface cools air to its dew point and fog forms
What is upslope fog?
As warm air goes upslope it cools and fog forms
What is precipitation – induced fog?
The precipitation from warm air evaporates and saturates cool air below
What is ice fog?
Moist air in extreme cold condition, when cold air cannot hold moisture and water vapor sublimates as ice crystals
When attempting to circumnavigate thunderstorms, what minimum distance is recommended?
At least 20 miles
