Weather Flashcards
Takeoff Alternate location requirement
Within 1 hour at cruise flight
When do you need a Destination Alternate
When 1 Hour before to 1 Hour after
Visibility 3SM or 2SM above lowest approach minimums (Greater)
Ceiling 1,500ft above lowest circling minimums OR if no circling minimums 1,500ft above lowest straight in minimums OR 2,000ft above airport elevation (Greater)
Destination Alternate Requirements for an airport with 1 approach 1 useable runway and 1 navigation facility
Reported ceiling > 400ft + Lowest HAT or HAA
Reported Visibility > 1SM + Visibility required for approach
Destination Alternate Requirements for an airport with 2 straight in approaches 2 different runways and 2 DIFFERENT navigation aids
Reported ceiling > 200ft + Lowest HAT or HAA
Reported Visibility > 1/2SM + Visibility required for approach
Requirements to land on an instrument approach
1 Normal Manuvers (NOT more than 30 degrees bank / 1,000 FPM)
2 Visibility
3 Runway Lighting
4 Runway Enviornment
You can’t decend below 100ft above TDZE using ALS unless red terminating bars or red side row bars are also distinctly visible and identifiable
When going missed on a Circling Approach turn TOWARDS the runway
VFR Minimum Altitudes
VFR Day 500ft AGL and 500ft horizontally from any obstacle
VFR Night 1,000ft AGL within a horizontal distance of 5 miles from course and 2,000ft in mountainous terrain
VFR Cloud Clearance
ABOVE 10,000ft MSL 5SM 1,000ft above 1,000ft below 1SM horizontal
BELOW 10,00ft MSL 3SM 500ft above 1,000ft below 2,000ft horizontal
EXCEPTIONS
Class B 3SM and Clear of Clouds
Class G below 1,200ft AGL Day 1SM Clear of Clouds
Class G above 1,200ft AGL below 10,000ft MSL 1SM 500ft below 1,000ft above 2,000ft horizontal
LAHSO Requirements
1 Dry Runway
2 3SM Visibility and 1,000ft Ceiling (VFR)
3 No and windshear reported within 20 minutes
What is a VDP
Visual decent point allows for a straight in normal approach to land
What is wind shear
Sudden, drastic change in windspeed and/or direction over a small area. Associated with low-level temperature inversion, passing frontal systems and thunderstorms
What is required for a thunderstorm to form and what operational hazards are present
Formation requires unstable air, lifting motion and high humidity
Avoid thunderstorms by flying at least 20 miles away, stay out from undeer the anvil top to avoid hail, be aware of possible microbursts, when penetrated ask ATC to vector you around larger cells, do not set autopilot on alititude, turn up cockpit lighting to reduce blinding effects of flashes, when on an approach and you experience a sudden increase in IAS expect a decrease in IAS to follow
Approach minimums for a captain with
When do you need a Takeoff Alternate
Weather is below approach minimums at departure airport
