Weather Flashcards
The effect of latitude on local weather conditions
Temperature decreases as latitude increases
The effect of aspect on local weather conditions
The direction which a place is facing, e.g South facing slopes receive much more sunlight than North facing ones
The effect of distance from sea on local weather conditions
Retains heat far better than the land but takes longer to heat up so land is often warmer than the sea during the day. This is reversed at night.
Precipitation is measured in?
Millimetres
Wind Speed is measured in
Knots
Wind direction is measured using…
Compass directions
Sunshine is measured in…
Hours
Air Pressure is measured in
Millibars
High pressure areas are shown by
Isobars (Above 1000mb)
The closer isobars are together…
The stronger the winds
Low pressure areas are shown by…
Isobars (Below 1000 mb)
What are weather elements like at the warm front in a depression
Steady rain, later giving away to drizzle and then finally clear skies
What are weather elements like at the warm sector of a depression
Clear, dry weather
What are weather elements like at the cold front of a depression
Heavier, cooler air meets the warm air at the centre, undercutting it and forcing it steeply upwards. Quickly moving air masses produce high winds and cooler temperatures.
What are weather elements like at the cold sector of a depression
Heavy rain or thunderstorms, giving way to showers and finally to clear skies as the cold front moves away eastwards.
I can describe what weather elements are like at an anticyclone in summer
Dry, hot
I can describe what weather elements are like at an anticyclone in winter
Clear skies bring cold nights and frost
The difference between weather and climate
Weather reflects the short term conditions and climate is the average daily weather over a long period of time
