Q

How does a laser guided bomb works?

A

The bomb is released on a ballistic path.
The laser seeker in the nose searches for reflected laser energy from the target .
Laser energy, matching the preset pulse repetition frequency is detected the onboard computer and signal to the wings in order to steer the bomb towards the target.
This is a weather dependent bomb

Q

How does a GPS/INS bomb work?

A

GPS aided on board INS
Bomb is fed with target location and the bombs current position, altitude, speed, and heading shortly before release
INS guidance only until satellites acquired
On board computer send signal to the tail kit wings in order to steer the bomb towards the target
All weather capable

16
Q

What is the least minimum of a cloud base for a full performance of a GPU 12?

A

5000 feet cloudbase

17
Q

What type of guidance system does a GBU 49 have

A

Laser and GPS/INS

18
Q

What is the normal GBU delivery characteristics

A

Normally dropped from 20-25,000ft
Normally dropped from 4-12 nautical miles

19
Q

What are the two different methods of attack?

A

Bomb on coordinate
Bomb on target

20
Q

When is it advantageous to use bomb on coordinate?

A

When the joint terminal attack controller determines that he can create the side effect on the target with close air support aircraft, and ordinance employing on a specified set of coordinates

21
Q

Name at least three bomb on coordinate considerations?

A

The aircraft must do a readback from systems
All aircraft employing kinetic effect must read back from systems
TLE main factor must match ground commanders, intent, and rules of engagement

22
Q

Name at least three bomb on target considerations?

A

Only the lead aircraft is required to read back the close air support brief all attacking aircraft will conduct readback if requested by the JTAC

It requires that the air crew is tally/contact/captured the JTACs intended target or aim point

Useful also against mobile targets and when JTAC is not able to generate low TLE coordinates
