Sensors Flashcards
What sensors might be expected on an operational close air support aircraft
Night vision goggles
Low light television
Synthetic aperture radar
Advanced targeting pods
What kind of capabilities has a advanced targeting pod?
CCD camera (daytime)
IR camera
Laser designator
IR pointer
Full motion video down link
What are some limitation with night vision goggles?
It is useless 30 minutes, pre-Dawn and post dusk
Low resolution at best
What is a low light television?
NVG sensor that amplifies ambient light
Unlike NVG you can zoom in, but still low resolution
What are the capabilities of a CCD camera?
Black and white picture
Daytime use only
2 to 4 field of view optical zoom
2 to 4 zoom level digital zoom
What are the capabilities of an IR camera?
Detect differences in temperature
Black-and-white picture
Black hot/white hot
Daytime and nighttime use
Field of view/zoom as CCD camera
Very limited use during thermal crossover
What is a laser spot tracker?
A device that looks for reflected laser energy in conjunction with the laser target designator
Allows us or third-party to mark a target with laser target designator
What are the advantages in using an IR pointer?
It’s covert can only be seen through NVG
Useful for marking
