What are the necessary requisites for a sacrament?
Instituted by God, immediately not by deduction.
What are five purposes of sacraments?
- Represent Christ and His benefits
- Confirm our interest in Him
- Display a visible difference between saints and the world
- Solemnly engage us to Christ’s service
- Testify to and cherish our union with Christ.
What is meant by sacramental union?
A relationship between the sign and the thing signified so that the names and effects of the one are attributed to the other.
How are the sacraments means of grace?
The Spirit works on worthy receivers to produce benefits.
Why is foot washing not a sacrament?
It is not tied to a covenant reality.
What does it mean to be a worthy receiver?
Worthy receivers have faith and also meditate on what the sacrament means so that they might be encouraged.
What are the two parts of a sacrament?
An outward, sensible sign, and an inward spiritual grace.
What does a sign do?
Points to something.
What does a seal do?
Confirms a thing.
Where does the power come in the sacrament?
Not in the elements but in the Holy Spirit blessing the words of institution.
