WCF 13 Sanctification Flashcards
What is sanctification?
The infusing of grace by God’s Spirit, enabling the believer to live unto righteousness and to mortify sin.
Sin weakened, faith strengthened.
Whom does God sanctify?
All believers, but not all equally
What are the grounds of sanctification?
God’s promise–those who are regenerate inherit the right to sanctification.
Who is the agent of sanctification?
The Holy Spirit.
What is the work of sanctification?
The lusts of sin are weakened and mortified. The whole man is renewed according to the image of God.
Can you go to heaven if you are not sanctified?
No, because sanctification begins simultaneously with justification.
WLC 75 “What is Sanctification?”
Answer: Sanctification is a work of God’s grace, whereby they whom God has, before the foundation of the world, chosen to be holy, are in time, through the powerful operation of his Spirit applying the death and resurrection of Christ unto them, renewed in their whole man after the image of God; having the seeds of repentance unto life, and all other saving graces, put into their hearts, and those graces so stirred up, increased, and strengthened, as that they more and more die unto sin, and rise unto newness of life.
What are two aspects of sanctification?
Positional/definitive: The dominion of sin is destroyed.
Progressive: The lusts of sin are weakened and mortified, and we are quickened and strengthened in saving graces.
What are the two parts of progressive sanctification?
Mortification and Vivification
What verses support mortification and vivification?
M: Col. 3:5 “Consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality”
V: Eph. 4:15 “we are to grow up in all aspects into Him”
Col. 3:12 “put on”
What is the extent of sanctification?
It subdues sin in the whole person, but is never completed in this life.
What are 3 differences between justification and sanctification?
- J imputes righteousness; S infuses grace
- J sin pardoned; S lusts of sin subdued
- J all equally justified; S none equally sanctified
Do we have two natures warring against each other?
No, we have only one nature, which has a seed of righteousness and a remnant of sin; these war against each other.
What is the source of both justification and sanctification?
Our union with Christ.
