Ways of studying the brain Flashcards
What happens in fMRI
Changes are detected in the blood oxygen levels of the brain, the higher levels detected the higher level of use in that side of the brain
What happens in EEG
Electrical activity is measured in the brain with electrodes on a skull cap
What happends in ERP
Takes many recordings of brain scans and uses statistical averaging techniques
What happens in post mortem examination
The deceased persons brain is sliced into many layers and analysed
What scan is used for cognitive activities
ERP
What scan is used for diagnostics
EEG
Strength of PME
Finding of Broca’s area
Weakness of PME
Difficult to establish cause and effect
Weakness of ERP
Poor spatial resolution
Weakness of ERP
Poor spatial resolution
Strength of EEG
Good for studying the stages of sleep
Weakness of EEG
Poor spatial resolution
Strength of fMRI
Doesn’t require the use of radiation like PET scans do (its non invasive)
Weakness of fMRI
5 second lag (poor temporal resolution)
