Ways of Knowing and Being as a Nurse Flashcards
PICO format for questions
P- Patient population of interest(age, gender, ethnicity, disease)
I- Intervention of interest (best intervention you are considering)
C- Comparison of interest ( usual standard of care )
O- Outcome ( what result do you want to achieve as a result of intervention)
Difference between evidence-based practice and research
Research is generating new knowledge or validating existing knowledge through trials and such. While evidence-based practice is taking this research that has already been created and applying it into practice based on personal experience, patient variability and other research available.
Steps in the Research Process (6 steps)
- Ask a question (PICO)
- Search and Collect the evidence
- Critically appraise the evidence
- Integrate evidence with clinical expertise, patient preferences etc.
- Evaluate the outcome of the practice decision or change
- Disseminate the outcomes
Difference between informed and misinformed evidence
Informed evidence has a high degree of reliability and validity, it can be replicated, have an extensive methodology, strong foundation of scientific principles.
Misinformed evidence has flawed or unreliable results that comes from biases and errors in the research.
3 Ethical Principles you must abide by in research
- Respect for persons
- Concern for welfare
- Justice
What is nursing research?
a) An ongoing process that incorporates evidence from research findings to inform decisions that nurses make about clients
b) the investigation of nursing phenomena that can be precisely measured and quantified
c) it poses questions about how nursing phenomena that cannot be quantified and measured
d) the primary means by which new nursing knowledge is discovered and brought into practice
D
As part of a nursing team you have been working through the process of applying the evidence in your practice. Which stage are you in if you are asking the question “ How effective was the clinical decision for your patient or practice setting?”
A) Integrating the evidence
B) Evaluating the design or change
C) Researching the evidence
D) Asking the clinical question
B
What are carpers 4 ways of knowing?
Empirical, Aesthetic, Ethical and Personal
Difference between health and wellness?
Health is a state of being free of illness while wellness is a positive approach to living . Cannot choose your health but you can choose your wellness.
What is the biomedical model of health?
The biomedical model of health focuses on the absence of disease and treatments for the illness, fails to notice individual complexities.
What is the biopsychosocial model of health?
Focuses on three domains of : biological factors, psychological factors and social factors. Views individuals as a complex system with many interacting characteristics.
What is the mind-body connection?
It is the relationship between psychological wellbeing and physical health. Like the placebo effect and how if we think we are getting the medication we imitate the assumed reactions.
What is research literacy?
The ability to locate, understand and critically evaluate empirical literature for application in practice.
In step three of the research process, what are you looking for when you critically appraise the evidence ?
Is the evidence relevant ? Is the evidence easily applicable in your setting of practice? Does the evidence have the potential to improve patient outcomes ? How well does the evidence answer your question?
