What is the definition of the nursing scope of practice?
The practice of nursing is the promotion of health and the assessment of, the provision of care for and the treatment of health conditions by supportive, preventive, therapeutic, palliative and rehabilitative means to attain or maintain optimal function
To meet the expectations of the standard of care what are the key concepts?
1) Authority- must know scope of practice
2) Context- does the environment support the performance of the activity?
3) Competence- do you have the knowledge to perform this care ?
What are controlled acts according to the scope of practice (CNO)
acts which may be performed only by authorized regulated health professionals
What are the controlled acts authorized to an RN?
1) performing a prescribed procedure below the dermis or a mucous membrane
2) administering a substance by injection or inhalation
3) putting an instrument, hand or finger beyond normal limits
4) treating an individuals serious disorder of thought, cognition, mood, emotional regulation through psychotherapy
5) dispensing a drug- if ordered by an RN with prescribing authority
What are the two authorizing mechanisms to perform a controlled act?
1) Orders- direct orders and directives
2) Delegation- nurses who are authorized to perform the controlled act can delegate to family members or unregulated health professionals
