Waves Quiz and Test Flashcards
What do waves carry?
Energy
What are the properties of waves?
Speed, amplitude, frequency, and wavelength
How do you calculate the speed of a wave?
speed= wavelength x frequency
How do you perceive color?
We use our primary colors which mix, then reflect a certain color back to our eyes.
- Differentiate between a transverse wave and a longitudinal wave. Be sure to describe the motion of each wave, and tell the direction the particles travel in each.
A longitudinal wave is a wave in which the disturbance of space of matter moves in a direction that is in the same direction as the transfer of energy. It includes compression, amplitude, refractions, and wavelength. A transverse wave is a wave in which the disturbance of space or matter moves in a direction that is perpendicular to the direction of the transfer of energy. A transverse wave includes a crest, wavelength, amplitude, and trough.
Mechanical wave
a mechanical wave is the sum of a potential and kinetic energy in a system of interacting objects.
Electromagnetic wave
a wave of energy propagated in an electromagnetic field
Frequency
for a wave, the number of crest passing a given point per unit time
Amplitude
- the distance from the midpoint of a wave to the crest (or trough) of the wave
Wavelength
the distance from one wave crest to the next (or the distance from one trough to the next)
Speed
rate at which someone or something moves or operates
transparent
lets visible light pass through
translucent
materials that let light pass through, but isn’t see through
opaque
materials that don’t let light pass through at all
Compare sound waves and light waves.
Sound waves require a medium to travel and travels through vibration. A longitudinal wave. A light wave is a transverse wave.
How does amplitude affect the pitch of sound?
If the amplitude increases, the pitch increases.
As the energy increases, the frequency _________.
increases
crest
the highest point of a wave
trough
the lowest point in a wave
compression
an area in a longitudinal wave where the particles of a medium are closest together
rarefaction
an area in a longitudinal wave where the particles are farthest apart
Increase amplitude -> decrease _________ -> increase in ___________.
wavelength, frequency
mechanical waves require a _________-and are classified by ______________.
medium, how they move.
frequency affects the _________.
pitch
amplitude affects ______________.
sound
rarefaction
an area in a longitudinal wave where the particles are farthest apart
