11
Q

Explain a difference between a transverse and longitudinalD wave (apart from oscillation direction)

A

All longitudinal waves need a medium to travel in e.g. air, gas or a solid whereas only some transverse waves do

Q

for ripples on the surface of water and sound waves travelling in air what travels the wave or the medium

13
Q

How can we prove this?(that the wave moves not the medium)

A

By using a slinky and moving it up and down representing ripples on the surface of water and putting a red Lego piece representing a water molecule you will see that the wave move however not the Lego.`

Q

How else can we prove this?(that the wave moves not the medium)

A

Doing the same experiment however moving slinky sideways, we can see that the red dot does not travel through medium

16
Q

What is the wavelength?

A

The distance from one point of a wave to the equivalent point on the adjacent wave.

17
Q

How do we measure wavelength of a longitudinal wave?

A

We measure from one compression to the next compression or from one rarefaction to the next rarefaction

18
Q

What is the frequency and what unit do we use

A

The frequency is the number of waves passing a point each second and the unit is Hertx (Hz)

19
Q

What is 1 Hz equivalent too?

A

1 wave per second

20
Q

How do we calculate wave frequency

A

Count the amount of waves that pass through a point within a second
