Waves Flashcards
Longitudinal Waves
Sound waves and a stretched spring are longitudinal. P waves (fast moving longitudinal seismic waves) are also longitudinal waves. In longitudinal waves the direction of vibration is the same as the direction of travel.
Transverse Waves
Light and other types of electromagnetic radiation are transverse waves. In transverse waves the vibrations are at a right angle to the direction of travel
Electromagnetic Spectrum ( shortest to longest )
Gamma, X-ray, Ultraviolet, Visible light, Infra red, microwaves, radio waves
Name three different behaviour of waves
Diffraction
Reflection
Refraction
what is the amplitude
The height of the wave above midpoint
what is the frequency symbol F measured in
Hertz Hz
The wave equation
wave speed equals frequency times wavelength
V = f lamda
Refractive Index
refractive index equals speed of light in a vacuum / speed of light in the medium
