Heat Transfer Flashcards
Conduction
Metals are good conductors due to free electrons. Kinetic energy increases in the atoms. This means they are moving around more and will move through to another metal.
Convection
Convection occurs in liquids and fluids, when the fluid is heated the particles begin to move around and spread further apart. This results in the fluid becoming less dense and the heat in there water can rise , resulting in a convection current.
Infra-Red
When a particle gains kinetic energy it emits infra red to cool down. If an object is hotter than its surrounding then it will emit more infra red than it absorbs. If it is cool then it will happen the opposite way around.
Evaporation
When the surface of a liquid gains enough Kinetic energy then they are able to break the bonds with the molecules, the remaining particles average kinetic energy decreases and this results in a drop in temperature
Rate of Heat Transfer
initial rate of cooling = temperature change/time taken
