What three things can happen when a wave arrives at a boundary between two different materials?

Absorption, reflection, transmission

What is absorption?
A
The waves are absorbed by the second material and the energy is transferred to the second material’s energy stores

What is reflection?
A
The waves bounce back from the second material back to the first

What is transmission?
A
The waves may carry on travelling through the new material, however they often undergo refraction.
