Waves 1 - Wave basics Flashcards
What is a wave?
An oscillation (vibration) that transfers energy and information without transferring matter
How do waves transfer energy?
By making the particles of the substance that it is travelling through oscillate.
What 2 types of waves are there?
Transverse and longitudinal
What is a transverse wave?
Waves that oscillate perpendicular to the direction of travel of the wave
Name 3 examples of transverse waves.
- Light waves
- Electromagnetic waves
- Ripples on water
- S-waves
What is a longitudinal wave?
A wave which has oscillations along the same line as they travel in.
Name 3 examples of longitudinal waves.
- Sound waves
- Spring when you push the end
- P-waves
What happens when waves travel through a medium?
The particles of the medium oscillate and transfer energy but overall the particles stay in the same place.
