Waves Flashcards
What motion do the ripples in water move with?
A transverse motion.
What happens to water waves when they hit a surface?
They’re reflected.
What is ‘superposition’?
When two waves meet and affect eachother.
What happens when waves ‘meet each other in step’?
They add together and reinforce eachother, and produce a wave with greater amplitude.
What happens when two waves meet eachother ‘out of step’?
They cancel out.
What is an undulation?
Up and down movements.
At what direction are the undulations in a transverse wave to its direction?
90 degrees.
What equipment can we use to show superposition?
A ripple tank.
What do we use to model transverse waves?
A rope.
What does an object or substance produce when it vibrates?
Sound.
What can sound waves travel through?
Solids, liquids and gases. They cannot travel through empty space.
What are sound waves?
Longitudinal.
The vibrations in a longitudinal wave are in the same direction as what?
The direction of travel.
What do we use to model longitudinal waves?
A long spring.
What do loudspeakers convert?
Electrical energy into kinetic energy.
