Biology Flashcards
What does the human central nervous system consist of?
The brain and spinal cord.
What does the sensory neurone do?
Carries signals from receptors to the spinal cord and brain.
What are groups of specialised cells that can detect changes in the environment?
Receptors.
What are the five sense organs?
Eyes Tongue Ears Nose Skin
What is a synapse?
The gap inbetween where two cells meet.
What happens when receptors are stimulated?
They send signals along nerve cells called ‘neurones’.
‘Any part of the body that produces the response (reflex action)’
An effector.
What is a stimulus?
A change in the environment that produces a response in the body.
It carries signals from the CNS to an effector.
Motor neurone.
Whay carries signals from the sensory neurone to the motor neurone?
The relay neurone.
What do the cells in smell receptors detect?
Chemical stimuli.
What is the process of a reflex action?
Stimulus-Receptor-Sensory Neurone-Relay Neurone-Motor Neurone-Effector-Response
