Waves Flashcards
What are transverse waves
When waves oscillate at a right angle to the direction in which the energy is moving
Eg. Slinky
What do waves carry
Waves carry energy and information from place to place, but not matter
What is a longitudinal wave
When the oscillations move along in which the energy or wave is moving
Eg. Sound waves
What is amplitude
The maximum movement I the particles from their resting position caused by a wave
What is wavelength
The distance between a particular point on a wave and the same point on the next wave
What is a period of a wave
It is the time it takes for a source to produce one wave
What is frequency
The number of waves produced each second by a source or the number passing a particular point each second
What is the wave equation
Wave speed= frequency (hertz) x wavelength (metres)
What can all waves be disturbed by
Reflection, refraction and diffraction
Describe the relationship between frequency and time period
Frequency (hertz)=
1
Time period (seconds)
