Momentum Flashcards
What happens when the mass is greater
The object has a greater velocity and therefore it has more momentum
What is the equations for momentum
Momentum= mass x velocity
What is the law of momentum
Momentum before= momentum after
Momentum is conserved when no external forces act.
What happens when a force is acting on momentum
It will cause the momentum to change
The larger the force means a faster change of momentum
What happens when someone’s momentum is changed very quickly (eg. Car crash)
The forces on the body will be very large and more likely to cause injury
What is the equation for force changing momentum
Force acting=
Change in momentum (kg m/s)
Time taken for change to happen (s)
The purpose of crumple zones
They crumple on impact, increasing the time taken for the car to stop
What is the purpose of seat belts
They stretch slightly, increasing the time taken for the wearer to stop. This reduces the forces acting on the chest
What is the purpose of air bags
They slow you down more gradually
Newton’s second law
force equals rate of change of momentum
Newton’s third law
For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction
