waves 2 property of light Flashcards
what is the angle of incidence
the angle between the light striking the mirror and the normal
what is the normal
a theoretical line that sits perpendicular to the mirror at the point in which the light ray strikes the mirror
angle of reflection
the angle between the normal and the reflected light ray
angle of refraction
the angle between the refracted ray and the normal r
what is the emerging angle equal to
the angle of incidence
what is the equation for the refractive index with the angle of incidence and angle of refraction as variables
refractive index=sin(angle of incidence)/sin(angle of refraction)
n=sin(i)/sin(r)
what is the light spectrum
red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet
what has the largest wavelength on the light spectrum
red
what has the smallest wavelength on the light spectrum
violet
what has the highest frequency on the light spectrum
violet
what has the lowest frequency on the light spectrum
red
why do all the colours in white light split apart when refracted
refraction of the light ray causes the different wavelengths to refract at different amounts, red refracts the least and violet reacts the most
why does refraction take place in different mediums
As the light ray enters a new medium such as glass or water they slow down for it is more dense than the air causing the light to change direction towards the normal
why does the light change direction away from the normal
for as it enters air which is less dense it speeds up and as a result the light changes direction away from the normal
what is the equation for the refractive index with the critical angle as a variable
n=1/sin(c)
