Waves Flashcards
Mechanic waves
Sound waves , water waves
Need a medium to travel through ( air )
Electromagnetic waves
Light waves radio waves
Do not need a medium they can travel through vacuums
Oscillators
Things which move with a regular to and fro motion are said to oscillate or vibrate
Amplitude
Maximum displacement of a particle from its central position
Frequency
The number of complete oscillations per second
Periodic time
The time a vibrating object takes to make one complete oscillation
Velocity
V of a wave is the speed at which it moves through a medium or vacuum
The wavelength
Lambda is the distance between two successive crests in a wave
Transverse waves
Light waves , water waves
Waves in which the displacement of the particles is at right angles to the direction of travel of the wave motion
Longitudinal waves
Sound wave
Waves in which the displacement of the particles is in line with or parallel to the direction of travel and wave motion
Real sign convention
Real is positive
anything Infront of mirror
Virtual sign convention
Virtual is negative
