Waves Flashcards
A repeating disturbance or movement that transfers energy through matter or space.
Wave
The matter the waves travel through.
Medium
A wave moving in a perpendicular direction.
Transverse wave
Made by moving back and forth.
Congressional wave
Congressional waves
Sounds waves
Transverse waves.
Water waves
Sound made from vibration.
Seismic waves
Alternating high points.
Crests
Alternating low points.
Troughs
This less-dense region of a Congressional wave.
Rarefaction
The distance between one point on a wave and the nearest point.
Wavelength
The number of wavelengths that pass a fixed point each second.
Frequency
Related to the energy carried by a wave.
Amplitude
The bending of a wave caused by a change in its speed as it moves from one medium to the next.
Refraction
occurs when an object causes a wave to change direction and bend around it.
Diffraction
When two or more waves overlap and combine to form a new wave.
Interference
A special type of wave pattern that forms when waves equal in wavelengths and amplitude, but travelling in opposite directions.
Standing wave
The process by which an object is made to vibrate by absorbing energy at its natural frequencies.
Resonance
A tough membrane about 0.1 mm thick.
Eardrum
A spiral shaped structure that is filled with liquid and contains tiny hairs.
Cochlea
The amount of energy that flows through a certain area in a specific amount of time.
intensity
The human perception of sound intensity.
Loudness
Each unit on the scale for sound intensity.
Decibel
How high or how low it seems to be.
Pitch
