Matter Flashcards
A type of matter with a fixed composition
Substance
If all the atoms have the same identity.
Element
Substance in which the atoms of two or more elements are combined in a fixed proportion.
Compound
A mixture in which different materials can be distinguished easily.
Heterogeneous mixture
Contains two or more gaseous, liquid, or solid substances blended throughout.
Homogeneous mixture
A homogeneous mixture of particles so small that they cannot be seen by microscope and settles to bottom of container.
Solution
A type of mixture with particles that are larger than those in solutions but not heavy enough to settle out.
Colloid
Scattering of light by colloidal particles
Tyndall effect
A heterogeneous mixture containing a liquid in which visible particles settle.
Suspension
Any characteristic of a material that you can observe without changing the identity of the substance that makes up the material.
Physical property
A change in size, shape, or state of matter.
Physical change
The process for separating substance in a mixture by evaporating a liquid and rerecording its vapor.
Distillation
A characteristic of a substance that indicates whether it can undergo a certain chemical change.
Chemical property
A change of one substance to another
Chemical change
The mass of all substances that are present before a chemical change.
Law of conversation of mass
An explanation of how particles in matter behave.
Kinetic theory
The temperature a solid begins to liquefy.
Melting point
The amount of energy it requires to change a substance from the solid phase to the liquid phase.
Heat of fusion
A temperature in which a liquid would vapor
Boiling point
The amount of energy required for the liquid at its boiling point to become gas
Heat of vaporization
The spreading of particles throughout a given volume until they are uniformly distributed.
Diffusion
Matter consisting of positively and negatively charged particles.
Plasma
An increase in the size of a substance when the temperature is increased.
Thermal expansion
The upward force on a object immersed in a liquid or gas.
Buoyancy
