Waves Flashcards
What are waves
Waves, is the transfer of energy without transferring matter across a medium of space.
What is amplitude
Amplitude is the height of a crest of a wave, measured from the undisturbed position of the medium carrying the wave.
Wave front
A line that connects all the peaks of a wave in two dimension. Particle along the wavefront vibrate in unisokn and in the same phase of disturbance
2 types of waves hat are they
Transverse wave and longtitudenal wave
Wave speed
Distance travelled by a body along a wave per unit time and can be calculated as the product of frequency and wavelength
Transverse wave
It is a wave by which particles are vibrating at right angle to the direction of energy transfer.
Eg. Water wave from the surface, Seismic waves due to earthquake
Longitudinal wave
Longitudinal wave is a wave by which the particles are vibrating parallel to the direction of energy transfer or wave traveling.
Eg. Soundwave, ultrasonic wave, seismic primary waves.
Reflection of wave
When a wave strikes a surface, its direction will change such that angle of incident is equal to angle of reflection
Reflection of wave due to a change of speed
When light waves travels from air to glass, the speed of wave decreases to retraction across whereby the angle of incident is greater than the angle of refraction the light waves bend torwards the normal
Diffraction, what happens if the gap is small and big and its wavelength
The smaller the gap, the greater the diffraction.
The larger the gap the less its diffraction
The longer its wavelength the greater its diffraction
The shorter its wavelength the less its diffraction
