Waves Flashcards
What is a transverse wave ?
- A transverse wave is one that vibrates at right angles to the direction in which it is moving – perpendicular
What is a longitudinal wave ?
Vibrations are along the direction in which the wave is moving .
Relation between frequency and wavlegth
Inverse
What is doppler effect ?
o * Doppler effect – apparent change in frequency which occur when a source of waves is moving When the object is still, the wave fronts are evenly spaced and have the same frequency
o The direction it moves in ,the waves will be compressed
o Shorter wavelength and frequency
Property of waves
– able to reflect ,refract and Doppler effect .
Property of EM waves
– all transfer energy ,all transverse waves ,travel at 300,000,000 m/s ,all reflected and refracted .(4)
What is refractive index and critical angle ?
- Refractive index – different materials bend rays of light by different amounts
- Critical angle – angle of incidence in the denser medium in which the angle of refraction is 90 degrees
Conditions of TIR
o Travel from dense to less dense
o Incidence greater than critical angle
How do optical fibres work ?
- The fibers are very narrow ,light entering the inner core always strikes at an angle greater than critical angle
