Waves Flashcards
(no answer for this q) Waves transfer energy and information without transferring matter
Define the terms frequency and wavelength
Frequency : number of waves passing a point each second ( measured in hertz (Hz))
Sound Frequency : determines the pitch
Light Frequency : determines colour
Wavelength : distance from a point on one wave, to a point in the same position on the next wave (measured in metres)
Use the terms amplitude, period, wave velocity
amplitude = distance from the middle to the top or bottom ( in metres)
the greater the amplitude the louder the sound
period= length of time it takes one wave to pass a given point
wave velocity = speed of the wave in the direction it is travelling - travel at different speeds in diff materials
What is a transverse wave?
A wave where the vibrations are 90 degrees to the direction it is travelling in
What is a longitudinal wave?
A wave where the vibrations are parallel to the direction it is travelling in
what’s the normal?
line at 90degrees of surface
what’s the angle of incidence?
angle that hits the mirror
equal to the angle of reflection
p waves can..
travel through liquids and solids
s waves can..
cannot travel through liquid bc it’s transverse
