Radioactivity Flashcards
What is the order of the Electromagnetic spectrum?(from long to short wavelength)
radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, x-rays and gamma rays.
what are the ionising types of radiation?
Beta minus , Beta plus , Alpha, Gamma, x ray, UV
how ionising and penetrating is alpha radiation?
most ionising and least penetration
How ionising and penetrating is Beta - radiation?
quite penetrating but not as much as gamma, more ionising than gamma but less than alpha
How ionising and penetrating is gamma radiation?
Most penetrating, not very ionising
short soundwaves =
higher pitch
red shift =
the further the lines have shifted, the faster the star is moving
red = away
blue= towards
big bang theory =
there was a single point of energy which caused an explosion - background radiation in the form of microwaves - and the universe is still expanding
steady state theory =
the universe has always existed and it’s expanding (new matter is being created)
what happens in a beta - nucleus?
neutron turns into a proton and fires an electron , charge of -1
beta plus and beta minus atomic mass number changes
beta plus decreases by one
beta minus increases by one
what is a tracer?
radioactive substances that are put into patients. Doctors can use a special camera to find out where the tracers are inside a patient, to help them to diagnose cancers or other diseases.
stages of fission
- neutrons fired at unstable nucleus
- 2 daughter nuclei neutrons emitted
- moderator to slow down (graphite water)
- allows chain reaction
- control rods of boron absorb neutrons
- lower = stop
