electricity Flashcards
what’s the yellow and green wire and what does it do?
the earth wire to stay safe, connects the circuit to the earth
what’s the blue wire?
neutral wire is there to complete the circuit with almost 0 volts
what’s the brown wire?
live wire that carries the high voltage of average 230
what does the fuse do?
melts if the current gets too high, which breaks the circuit to prevent electrical fires
what is static?
buildup of electrical charge
why do sparks happen?
when the gal to earth is small enough that it’s electrically favourable for charge to move across the gap to / from statically charged object.
how to prevent spark?
earthing
what is earthing?
when an object is connected to earth so the charge can flow away in order to neutralise the object (eg Barbie)
how does static happen?
work done by friction between insulators causes the transfer of electrons from one to the other
why do balloons stick to walls when statically charged?
electrons in the neutral atoms (wall) move slightly away fromcthe surface because like charges repel, leaving the surface with a positive charge charged objects will induce charge on the neutral object
