Waves Flashcards
What is a wave?
The transfer of energy from one place to another
What is energy?
Potential, Kinetic
What is heat?
A form of energy when particles are moving fast
What is heat transfer?
Heat always moves from where it is hotter to cooler
What is conduction
Where heat transfers through a solid
What is convection?
Movement of heat between liquids and gases
What is radiation?
The movement of heat to gases
Conductors and Insulator
Conductors allows the flow of heat in one or more direction
Insulators don’t allow the passage of heat to flow
Transverse Wave?
Oscillation is perpendicular to the direction of the wave e.g. light and water waves
longtitudal wave
Oscillation is parallel to the direction of the wave e.g sound
needs particles
Wave length
Distance between crests
Amplitude
The height from the equilibrium to crest (a)
Compression
When particles are squashed together
Medium
Substance that carries a wave from one llocation to another
Rarefraction
Separate particles
Hertz
Unit of frequency
What is a light wave?
Electromagnetic waves that travel through a medium or vacuum
Reflection
The light reflected off a smooth surface
Law of reflection
angle of incidence = angle of reflection
Why can’t you see the reflection on all surfaces?
Surfaces have to be smooth in order for the light rays to reflect in the same direction however on rough surfaces the rays bounce of at different angles and reflection
Refraction
The bending of light rays when they travel through different densities
Lens?
Piece of transparent material that can focus or disperse light
convex
Rays spread out revealing a larger imagee.g car mirror
Concave
Rays meet at a focus point e.g binoculars
SOund wave
Form of energy that is created through vibrations
Pitch
How high or low a sound is
Decibel
The loudness of a sound
Why can no sound be heard on space
Space is a vacuum meaning their are no particles and sound waves need particles to produce sound
What is the wave equation
Velocity = frequency x wave length
