Waves Flashcards
Oscillations are perpendicular to the direction of what ?
The wave energy
Waves do NOT need what to travel ?
A medium
LONGITUDINAL WAVES :
What is the properties of longitudinal waves ?
Parallel to the direction of waves
Example of longitudinal wave ?
Sound wave
What is the WAVELENGTH?
Distance from wave crest to another wave crest
Measured in metres (m)
FREQUENCY ?
Number of waves passing at a fixed point in 1 seconds
Measured in hertz (h)
TIME PERIOD ?
Time taken by waves to pass in a fixed position
Measured in seconds
EQUATION FOR TIME PERIOD:
T= 1 % F
WAVE SPEED FORMULA :
Wave speed = frequency X wave length
SOUND WAVES :
What are sound waves caused by ?
By vibrations
What type of wave is a sound wave ?
Longitudinal
What can sound waves travel through?
Solid ,liquids and gases (medium)
What can waves not travel through ?
Space because there are not particles in space to carry them
FREQUENCY AND SOUND :
- sound waves CAN reflect
- high frequency=high pitch
- low frequency =low pitch
AMPLITUDE AND SOUND:
- related to volume of sound
- higher the amplitude the LOUDER the sound
