Forces Flashcards
What is scalor quantity?
Quantities with only magnitude
What is a vector ?
Quantity with magnitude and direction
Examples of scalor quantities ?
Speed
Voltage
Distance
Examples of vector quantities?
- velocity
- displacement
- acceleration
What is a force ?
Push or pull
Nothing can move without force
Measured in Newton’s (N)
Force can change SHAPE,DIRECTION AND SPEED
What is contact force ?
When two force ARE touching each other
what is non - contact force ?
When two forces are NOT touching each other
Example of contact force :
Normal force
Air resistance
Friction
Examples on NON-contact :
Gravitational
Electrostatic
Upthrust
WEIGHT,MASS AND GRAVITATION FEILD STRENGTH:
weight = (N) Newton’s
Mass= (Kg)
Gravitational field strength = (N/kg)
What apparatus is used to determine an objects weight ?
Newtonmeter
What is mass ?
Amount of matter in an object
What is weight ?
FORCE acting on an object due to GRAVITY
What is the gravitational field strength on earth ?
9.8 (N/KG)
Comparison of weight and mass :
Weight is the force on an object whereas mass is the matter in an object
Weight is measured in Newton’s but mass is measured in kg
Weight changes depending which planet you on but mass remains the same wherever you are
What is HOOKES LAW :
extension applied is DIRECTLY PROPORTIONAL to the force applied, to LIMIT of PROPORTIONALITY
Equation for force :
Force applied = extension x spring constant
Units for equation for force
Force applied = newtons
Extension = cm/m
Spring constant = n/m
What does directly proportional mean ?
If force is INCREASED BY A FACTOR then EXTENSION also INCREASE by the same factor :
E.g doubling force (double extension)
What does it mean by spring constant ?
Tell us the STIFFNESS of a SPRING do they the HIGH K VALUE means STIFFER spring so LESS EXTENSION
