Waves-1 types + refraction Flashcards
what is a longitudinal wave?
particles oscillate/vibrate parallel to the direction of energy transfer E.g sound
what is a transverse wave?
particles oscillate/vibrate perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer
what is a longitudinal wave made up of?
compression and rarefaction
what is a transverse wave made up of?
Amplitude, crests and troughs
what is the frequency of a wave?
number of waves passing each second ( F= 1/T)
what is the measurement for frequency?
Hz
What is refraction?
the bending of light as it passes from one medium to another.
what are the 3 rays apart of refraction?
incident ray, refracted ray, emergent ray
how fast do waves travel through dif materials?
air- fast
glass- slow
diamond- slowest
where is the normal?
point of incident: perpendicular
how does the ray move toward and away from normal at different points:
in glass refracted ray towards normal, back out into air emergent ray away from normal
what makes the waves move slower or faster?
the different desnities
