Waves 1 Flashcards
What is phase difference?
The difference between the displacements of particles on a wave.
What is the law of reflection?
The angle of incidence is equal to the angle of refraction.
What happens when a wave slows down when entering a different material?
It refracts towards the normal line.
When are diffraction effects most noticeable?
When the gap that the wave is being passed through is about equal in size to the wavelength.
What has happened to a polarised wave?
It only oscillates in one direction.
How can you calculate intensity?
Intensity = Radiant Power / Area of Surface
What is the relationship between intensity and distance?
An inverse square relationship.
What is the relationship between intensity and amplitude?
Intensity is directly proportional to amplitude x amplitude.
What is the wavelength of visible light?
400nm - 700nm
What is Snell’s Law?
The refractive index of a material x the angle made with the normal = the refractive index of a second material x the second angle made with the normal.
How can you calculate the critical angle of a material?
SinC = 1 / n
