Wave behaviour and electromagnetic waves Flashcards
What are the 3 things that can happen when a wave meets a boundary?
- Absorbed-the wave transfers energy to the material’s energy stores
- Transmitted-the wave carries on travelling through the new material
- Reflected-When the incoming wave is sent back away from the second material
What kind of waves are EM waves?
transverse
How does a camp fire transfer energy to its surroundings?
It emits infrared radiation which are absorbed and energy is transferred to an object’s thermal energy store.
How do radio waves transfer energy?
They transfer energy to the kinetic energy stores of electrons in radio receivers, which generates an electric current
What are electromagnetic waves?
Waves with vibrations of electric and magnetic fields so they can travel through a vacuum.
What is the order for the EM spectrum?
Which EM wave has the longest wavelength and the lowest frequency?
Radio waves
Which EM wave has the shortest wavelength and the highest frequency?
Gamma rays
What EM waves can we see?
Visible light
