Radio waves Flashcards
1
Q
How can you produce radio waves?
A
Using an alternating current in an electrical circuit or oscillating electrons
2
Q
Describe how radio waves are transmitted and detected
A
- Electrons oscillate and produce EM waves
- Transmitters emit the radio waves which transfer energy
- A receiver absorbs the EM waves and causes the electrons in the receiver to oscillate
3
Q
How long are the wavelengths of radio waves?
A
longer than 10cm
4
Q
How big are long-wave radio signals?
A
1-10km
5
Q
What happens to long-wave signals?
A
They diffract (bend) around the curves surface of the Earth so they can still be received
6
Q
How big are short-wave radio signals?
A
10m-100m
7
Q
What happens to short-wave signals?
A
They are reflected from the ionosphere
