Waterworth et al (2015) Recognising low mood and depression in older patients Flashcards
Design
Qualitative study informed by a constructivist grounded theory approach
Method
In-depth telephone interviews
Final sample number
40 nurses, 5+ years experience
Important factors to recognise low mood as per nurses interviews
Being alert, knowing the patient over a period of time, asking questions, offering opinions, providing time to listen
Which specific strategies could the nurse incorporate into their practice to help patients.
Providing information about medication, motivational interviewing, goal setting and suggesting relaxation therapy.
Which strategies were found to be more effective than antidepressants in patients without severe depression?
Building on nurse-patient relationships that were already present in primary care, and introducing a nurse telehealth support system.
Limitations
Participants were self-selecting and as such. Both the district nurse and heart failure samples are small. The views expressed by the nurses are self-reports and may not represent actual practice, or how older people would view that practice.
