Water Unit Vocabulary Test Flashcards
Aquatic
Relating to water, living near or in water or taking place in water!
Biosphere
The layer of life that is on our planet – includes all land and water life!
Creek
A small channel in which water flows!
Disposal
The throwing out of material that is seen as not useful!
Ecosystem
The interaction of both living and non-living things!
Endangered
A species that is seriously at risk of extinction!
Entanglement
The interaction of wildlife with garbage or other human-produced materials that traps, harms or kills wildlife!
Environmental Impact
The influence of human activities upon ecosystems and the biosphere!
Non‐renewable
A resource that is being used at a rate that is far faster than it is produced!
Potable
Safe to drink!
Pollutants
Substances that have a negative effect on the environment!
Renewable
Resources that are replaced or produced at a rate greater than being used!
Reservoirs
A large natural or artificial body of water that is used as a source of drinking water!
Resources
Any material, money, stock or personnel that is used by humans to make things easier!
River

Materials that make living things less healthy, sick or dead!
Water Advisory
A notice that is given to people when the water is not fully safe to drink or use!
Watershed
The area of land that drains into a river, lake or ocean!
Water Table
The point at which the soil or ground becomes saturated with water!
Wetlands
Areas of ground in which the water table is at or near the surface of the land!
Algae Bloom
An algal bloom or marine bloom or water bloom is a rapid increase in the
population of algae in an aquatic system!

Ground Water
Water that is below the surface of the land and can flow or accumulate!
Hydrosphere
Layer of water that is on and around the planet!
Ice Caps (Continental Glaciers)
These are large accumulations of ice and snow that are on
the land and cover large areas of the surface – Greenland and Antarctica have large continental glaciers!
Infiltration
The seeping, soaking or percolating of a fluid into the ground or other semi-solid
material!
Leaching
The draining away of material by action of rainwater through soil, rock or garbage!
Riparian zone
The area between the river and the land – the river bank!
River Delta
The sediment that is deposited at the mouth of a river!
Saline
Having a lot of dissolved salt saline water is sometimes called saltwater!
