Science Fluids Flashcards
Adhesion
The tendency of a fluid to stick to materials with which it is in contact!
Buoyancy
The upward force acting on an object in a fluid!
Cohesion
The tendency of particles of a fluid to stick to one another – it varies by fluid type!
Compression
A reduction of the volume of a material. Squeezing by force!
Condensation
The change of state (phase change) from gas to liquid (opposite of evaporation)!
Convection
The rising of warm, less dense fluid over cooler, more dense fluid!
Contraction
The reduction of volume due to the loss of thermal energy!
Density
A measure of how much matter is in a given volume of material! Usually g/cm3!
Evaporation
The phase or state change from a liquid to a gas! It requires energy!
Expansion
The increase in volume due to the increase in thermal energy of a material.
Force
Any push or pull that is applied to an object or surface!
Hydraulic
A closed system of liquid fluid used to transfer or magnify force to do work!
Mass
A measure of the amount of matter in an object!
Melting
The phase or state change between a solid and a liquid! It requires energy!
Pneumatic
A closed system of gas fluid used to transfer or magnify force to do work!
Pressure
Force that is exerted in all directions by a fluid (gas or liquid) on all contact
surfaces within environment or a closed system!
Solidification
The phase or state change from a liquid to a solid. Requires a loss of energy!
Sublimation
The phase or state change directly from solid to gas! Requires a lot of energy!
Thermal
Having to do with heat!
Volume
The three-dimensional space. Measured in units of length cubed – cm3, m3, ft3!
Weight
The force of gravity acting on a particular object!
Viscosity
The thickness of a liquid or its resistance to flow!
