Water soluble vitamins - Thiamin (B1) Flashcards
What are the functions for each form of thiamin
TTP - noncoenzyme - nervous system - regulates sodium channels and chloride transport in nerve transduction
TDP or TPP - coenzyme - energy production by DEHYDROGENASES (pyruvate to acetylCoa) - NADPH and pentose synthesis - part of TRANSKETOLASE
what is a thiamin deficiency and what are different variations
major targets = peripheral nerves, heart, and brain
chronic thiamin deficiency = beriberi (in diets where most of diet is polished rice)
what is wernicke-korsakoff syndrome
chronic thiamin deficiency in alcoholics
- dec thiamin intake, absorption, utilization
- psychosis, delirium, ataxia, vomit, large heart
- thiamin is MC NUTRITIONAL DEFICIENCY IN ALCOHOLICS (yikes)
what are sources of thiamin
yeast, pork, whole grains, enriched grains, legumes
what are poor sources of thiamin
raw fish and shellfish
dry beriberi
low thiamin high carb
muscle weak, extremity wasting, peripheral neuropathy, tender calves
wet beriberi
enlarged heart, rapid heart beat, peripheral EDEMA, high blood pressure
acute beriberi
chronic infant deficiency (2-5 months of age)
breastfed by mothers with poor thiamin intake
anorexia, nausea, vomiting, lactic acidosis
