What are the functions for each form of thiamin

A

TTP - noncoenzyme - nervous system - regulates sodium channels and chloride transport in nerve transduction

TDP or TPP - coenzyme - energy production by DEHYDROGENASES (pyruvate to acetylCoa) - NADPH and pentose synthesis - part of TRANSKETOLASE

A

major targets = peripheral nerves, heart, and brain

chronic thiamin deficiency = beriberi (in diets where most of diet is polished rice)

A

  • dec thiamin intake, absorption, utilization
  • psychosis, delirium, ataxia, vomit, large heart
  • thiamin is MC NUTRITIONAL DEFICIENCY IN ALCOHOLICS (yikes)
