What is a body of water?
An area of water, natural or manage manmade eg pools or river
List 5 ways to be safe around swimming pools.
• Don’t swim without an adult watching
• Don’t run or ride a bicycle or play games around a pool
• never push anyone into a pool
• don’t hold anyone down under the water
• don’t play games that require you to shout help
List ways to be safe around water in the home.
With very young children:
• adults should supervise filling a bath and when child is in bath
• put a rubber mat on bath to stop slipping
Also:
• always empty and pack away inflatable pools after use
• empty buckets of water or put a lid water
How can you stay safe in rivers and dams?
• read and obey signs that warn of danger
• be careful in rivers even if they calm because there might be strong undercurrents
• don’t use inflatable tubes etc. because might bow away
What to do if you are in danger in a body of water
- keep calm
- raise one arm in the air and call for
- tread water or float
- try to find something that floats to hold on to
What can you do if you see someone in danger in a body of water?
- call loudly for an adult
- do not jump into the water
- throw something towards the person to help them float eg or jacket, ball, lid of cooler box
- lie on or stomach and use broom or long stick to reach the person
