The primary concern at water rescues is the safety of our members. there will be times that we should not enter the water this includes drill . They are
- Water/weather conditions - factors such as wave height ,riptide sweep tides
- Location of victim - how far victim is and if they can Be reached safely
- Skill level of rescuer - van rescuer reach victim under above circumstances
- Night ops - members should not be allowed past line of sight from shore .. Portable lights to scene
Who should be designated the primary rescuer
A member trained in the suit and familiar with its capabilities should be designated the primary rescuer
Member with lifeguard experience or scuba dived should be considered first
Assign Roll call
Do not assign primary rescuer as a riding position ( nozzle is primary rescuer)
Tides
4 tides in 24 hours
2 coming in (high)
2 going out (low)
Slack tide is the 45 min between low and high tides
Rip tides
Occur when tide is going out
Rip currents are primary source of distress in drowning victims
To escape swim parallel to shore
Sweep tides
Tide runs parallel to beach
More pronounced on out-going tides
Waves diagonal to beach and can sweep swimmers into rip current
Rescuers should enter water upstream of the sweep
