Disentanglement And Patient Extrication Flashcards
Seatbelt pretensioners are
Designed to reduce blunt force trauma as well as impact with airbags
Devices are mechanical .,which remain live even when battery disconnected
Or electrical activated using a spring or pyrotechnic device to deploy
Removal of seatbelt as soon as practical is recommended
Our members should always treat the area around the airbags as if they haven’t deployed . The minimum safe distances observed should be
5” from side airbags
10” from driver airbags
20 “ from passenger airbags
Disconnecting battery starts the drain time for electronic airbags .. Does not effect mechanically activated ones
Automatic rollover protection
Deploy when vehicle begins to rollover
Typically stowed behind the seats in convertibles in rear deck area
May deploy during rescue
Disconnect battery and avoid it’s deployment path
In some newer vars may be manually deployed if so manually deploying it may be a course of action
First arriving officers must do this if people are pinned in a car accident
Notify dispatcher
Disentanglement
The removal of wreckage from around the victim
Extrication
The physical removal of victims from vehicle
The power unit should be placed in front or the rear of the vehicle
Never Position any part of the body between the tool and the vehicle
Engine company ops at Disentanglement/ extrication
- Officer divide company into 2 teams
- Officer and two members proceed to scene of accident (with trauma bag and cervical collars )
3 FF s can access to vehicle for trauma assessment and initiate treatment
4 remaining members stretch and charge a precautionary line
NOTE: when fire or hazardous condition exists upon arrival stretching and charging a hose line is paramount …..consider a foam handline
Ladder company inside team ops at Disentanglement/Extrication
- Officer/FE team proceed to scene of the accident to initiate perimeter survey
Chock the wheels and gain access to the vehicle
Ensure car is in park , windows opened, seats are moved back and seat belts removed before shutting down ignition
If engine or EMS not on scene stabilize patient
Engine/ems arrival pass off patient
Roof/ovm team at Disentanglement/Extrication
Roof and ovm bring hurst tool equipment to a scene of accident and initiate operation
LCC
Blocks of traffic with rig initially
Can be used to bring additional equipment
Who ensures the battery disconnected
The officer
Remove negative terminal first
What should the inside team ensure before shutting down ignition
Car is in park
Windows are open
Seats are moved back
Seatbelts removed
Where should the power unit be placed when extricating persons from vehicle
I’m front of or to rear of vehicle
Never position any part your body between the tool and vehicle
Vehicle stabilization includes
Placing step chocks Shutting down engine Engaging parking break Putting transmission into park Disconnecting battery ( open power windows and adjust power seats before disconnect battery )
Two rules to be considered when stabilizing vehicles
- Vehicles stabilized as they are found
2. Never right a vehicle with victim inside
