Disentanglement And Patient Extrication Flashcards
Seatbelt pretensioners are
Designed to reduce blunt force trauma as well as impact with airbags
Devices are mechanical .,which remain live even when battery disconnected
Or electrical activated using a spring or pyrotechnic device to deploy
Removal of seatbelt as soon as practical is recommended
Our members should always treat the area around the airbags as if they haven’t deployed . The minimum safe distances observed should be
5” from side airbags
10” from driver airbags
20 “ from passenger airbags
Disconnecting battery starts the drain time for electronic airbags .. Does not effect mechanically activated ones
Automatic rollover protection
Deploy when vehicle begins to rollover
Typically stowed behind the seats in convertibles in rear deck area
May deploy during rescue
Disconnect battery and avoid it’s deployment path
In some newer vars may be manually deployed if so manually deploying it may be a course of action
First arriving officers must do this if people are pinned in a car accident
Notify dispatcher
Disentanglement
The removal of wreckage from around the victim
Extrication
The physical removal of victims from vehicle
The power unit should be placed in front or the rear of the vehicle
Never Position any part of the body between the tool and the vehicle
Engine company ops at Disentanglement/ extrication
- Officer divide company into 2 teams
- Officer and two members proceed to scene of accident (with trauma bag and cervical collars )
3 FF s can access to vehicle for trauma assessment and initiate treatment
4 remaining members stretch and charge a precautionary line
NOTE: when fire or hazardous condition exists upon arrival stretching and charging a hose line is paramount …..consider a foam handline
Ladder company inside team ops at Disentanglement/Extrication
- Officer/FE team proceed to scene of the accident to initiate perimeter survey
Chock the wheels and gain access to the vehicle
Ensure car is in park , windows opened, seats are moved back and seat belts removed before shutting down ignition
If engine or EMS not on scene stabilize patient
Engine/ems arrival pass off patient
Roof/ovm team at Disentanglement/Extrication
Roof and ovm bring hurst tool equipment to a scene of accident and initiate operation
LCC
Blocks of traffic with rig initially
Can be used to bring additional equipment
Who ensures the battery disconnected
The officer
Remove negative terminal first
What should the inside team ensure before shutting down ignition
Car is in park
Windows are open
Seats are moved back
Seatbelts removed
Where should the power unit be placed when extricating persons from vehicle
I’m front of or to rear of vehicle
Never position any part your body between the tool and vehicle
Vehicle stabilization includes
Placing step chocks Shutting down engine Engaging parking break Putting transmission into park Disconnecting battery ( open power windows and adjust power seats before disconnect battery )
Two rules to be considered when stabilizing vehicles
- Vehicles stabilized as they are found
2. Never right a vehicle with victim inside
What is best stabilization method for a vehicle on all four wheels
Using step chocks and wedges
- Place chocks just behind front wheels and in front of rear wheels , step side down ( should not interfere with foot swing )
- Place chocks so they make snug contact with the rocket panel (wedge may be required
- When further stabilization required deflate tires ( not always necessary )
Use vice grips or pliers to remove valve to deflate tires
Stabilization of vehicles on side or on roof
Place step chocks and wedges under side of car and tires
Vehicle shall be secured to a substantial object with utility rope
No member enter vehicle until properly stabilized
Good initial choice for entering vehicle is front or rear windows
When the hinge side approach is used to removed a door you should cut this hinge first
Top hinge first
Bottom second
If hinge has a spring must be removed before cutting hinge ( Haligen or officers tool)
If door stop cot that also
When using the third door removal to extricate a victim from the rear of a 2 door car four cuts are made . Where are these cuts made?
Top of B post
Bottom of B post
Vertical cut rear quarter panel
Horizontal cut rear quarter panel at the rocker panel
When removing the roof of vehicle what 3 tools can be used to cut windshield ?
Sawzall with wood cutting blade
Windshield hand saw
And axe
When removing the entire roof after making the cut you should carry the roof towards the front or towards the back of car
Toward front of vehicle
When using the hinge forward method of roof removal do you need to cut the windshield
No does not have to be cut
Before using the windshield saw to cut a windshield make sure the blade is installed correctly . How is it installed correctly
The teeth facing the handle of the tool
Of the 3 methods that can be used to cut a windshield which is the least desirable method ?
Using the Axe
When using axe take firm but not full. Strokes and strike the windshield with corner of the axe blade
When using the Haligen to break the tempered glass on the side or rear windows you should
Insert the adz end between door frame and glass and exert downward pressure
This method may not be effective on newer type glass
Side or rear windows that are laminated or rigid plastic a Sawzall may be used
When attempting to access the passenger compartment of a vehicle when the vehicle is on it’s side access can usually be made by the front or treat windows if the roof is intact . What shall be done if roof is crushed ?
Cut the roof posts and hinge the roof down
An alternate. Method to accessing a passenger compartment when the vehicle is on it’s side is to cut an opening in roof of vehicle . What is tool of choice to cut a hole in the roof?
Air chisel is tool of choice
Prior to cutting roof remove interior liner
When removing the door when car is on it’s roof what is the preferred method of door removal ?
Attacking hinge side
If a member gets hydraulic fluid in their eyes the eyes should be flushed for at least _____\ minutes
